Bentota, south of Colombo, has a long broad sandy beach, perfect for swimming and relaxing. This civilised resort has all the services a visitor could need, including a railway station, from which you can explore the island. Visit the Brief Garden
Well-known Sri Lankan artist, and brother of renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, Bevis Bawa designed and laid out this five acre property. The garden is filled with tropical plants, interspersed with sculptures and decorative buildings.
Madu Ganga River safari
Cruise through the mangroves and explore the islands that dot the river. There are over 111 bird species, and a rich variety of plants and wildlife. A nature-lovers dream.
Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project
Experience the turtles in their natural habitat, and maybe even witness them laying eggs in the sand.
Visit Kande Viharaya
A temple dating from the 1700s, the Kande Viharaya is a pioneer centre for Buddhist education in Sri Lanka, It has a number of ancient sculptures, statues and colourful frescoes dating back to the Kandyan era (15th-19th century).
